2006 was the year that Jeff Tweedy decided to go public. Together with Kicking Television - the Wilco live album - this DVD provides an excellent document of Jeff Tweedy, the performer. In addition, Sunken Treasure also delivers a different perspective of Tweedy, not as the frontman of Wilco, but as an accomplished singer-songwriter in his own right. Singing songs not only from his Wilco repertoire - but also Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur and the Mermaid Avenue volumes - Tweedy not only demonstrates his artistic credibility but also the depth of his material. After all, what is a song if it cannot be delivered by guitar and voice only? And Tweedy has a great voice; the listener benefits greatly from hearing it unadorned and unobstructed by instrumentation. Personally, my estimation of him as an artist (which I must admit fell a little due to the weakness of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born) has grown by leaps and bounds and will bear re-assessment. But the highlight of this DVD is Tweedy’s obvious rapport with his audience, especially on the occasion when he chastises them for talking during the concert...bound to put a smile on your face. Not to mention moments when Tweedy screws up his lines and gets away with it...as on “Shot in the Arm.” Should you enjoy your rock music personal and effacing, Sunken Treasure, simply put, is a brilliant concert DVD.
