I’ll be up front. It’s rather maddening and difficult to write a review of a band who calls themselves Young Galaxy, whose front man is a former guitar player for the Canadian indie-pop group Stars, and who create such intoxicating and enchanting music without resorting to the use of descriptors and adjectives pertaining to all things outer space. Seriously now - how is one supposed to describe this band’s pulsating keyboard swells and lush guitar work without using words like stellar, spacey, celestial, or cosmic? Nevertheless, extraterrestrial metaphors aside, the Vancouver-bred and Montreal-based dating duo of Stephen Ramsey and Catherine McCandless have crafted a collection of eleven dreamy, yet catchy songs that pack a lyrical wallop with their intense spiritual depth. From the delectable opener “Swing Your Heartache” (available on 7” as well!), through the swirling atmospheric sounds of “The Sun’s Coming Up And My Plane’s Going Down,” and all the way to the controlled frenzy of the album-ending track “The Alchemy Between Us,” Young Galaxy is truly a band with a sound as expansive and awe-inspiring as their name implies. This is accessible shoegazing music at its finest.
