VOXTROT

VOXTROT

PLAYLOUDRECORDINGS (05/22/07)

Voxtrot leaves the melodic indie-pop of the Raised by Wolves EP behind for the more standard indie-rock of their proper self-titled full-length debut. Though they dabble in pop on “Stephen” and “Every Day,” much of the album revolves around the indie-rock of album highlights “Kid Gloves” and “Firecracker.” Despite the more rocking sound, Voxtrot maintain their distinct creative originality, much like Modest Mouse or The Flaming Lips. Unafraid of pop and bold in their pursuit for advancing the indie-rock ethic of innovation and originality, Voxtrot could be found playing beach parties in the Riviera or night clubs in New York. Their versatility and wide scope create a flavor for anyone’s palette. Ramesh Srivastava’s studies in Scotland indelibly influenced his music, as British 80’s alternative pop like Teenage Fanclub, The Wedding Present, and even The Housemartins infuse Voxtrot’s rocking indie-pop. And like these influences, it’s a complex and finely crafted affair of melody and rock. Voxtrot have influences and they are inclined toward this and that, but what sticks out is their penchant for creating unique music that belongs as much in the past as in the here and now. Not necessarily timeless, but a meld of past and present. From the lush strings on “Every Day” that lead into wonderful country-western rhythm guitar, or the bouncy pop of “Stephen,” Voxtrot cover an entire spectrum of sounds that form an eagerly anticipated and well-crafted debut album.
