Don’t let the fact that Catch and Release is a Jennifer Garner chick flick keep you from enjoying its oft-times topnotch soundtrack, as there are many fine songs by familiar favorites to hook up with. It’s good to hear “My Drug Buddy” by The Lemonheads once again. Death Cab For Cutie’s “Soul Meets Body” never gets old either. Former Replacement Tommy Stinson helped soundtrack this film, which probably explains Paul Westerberg’s presence with “Let The Bad Times Roll.” Westerberg’s contribution points back to his quieter side, and similarly, the music of this disc is mainly subdued. Alaska!’s “Resistance” has a lighthearted country kick to it. And while Foo Fighters’ “Razor” is acoustic, David Grohl’s performance is like a ticking time bomb. In addition to its string of popular artists, this CD includes many fine selections from lesser-knowns, like Doves, The Swallows, and Gary Jules. Despite this soundtrack’s overall high quality, it is disappointing that no songs were written specifically for the film; it’s closer to an exemplary mix tape, rather than a series of songs mirroring a film.
