With The Krinkles’ third album, self-released on its own Mordorlorff imprint, the Chicago four-piece presents the full package. They have the look. The album cover, a spoof on MCA’s Millennium Collection greatest-hits discs, features the band, dapperly decked out in colorful suits, looking forlorn and slightly pensive. And they most certainly have the sound. The Mordorlorff Collection is filled to the brim with bouncing power pop melodies that rival Cheap Trick or The Raspberries, along with soaring harmonies and guitar attack to spare. Add a dash of naughtiness (“Dirty Girl”), a pinch of fuzzy Crazy Horse riffing (“Blinded By Love”), and a bit of balladry (“Closer To Here Than There”), and the formula is complete. All the band needs now is the benefits of big-time production—its sound often strikes as a bit too lo-fi for its worth. So attention record labels: The Krinkles are ready. Make ‘em huge.
