THE EYE THE EAR AND THE ARM

PATHS

PORTIA (02/05/08)

Paths is the debut release from this three-piece band from California, heavily reliant on a driving drum kit and the smashing/mashing of myriad different parts into each individual song. It’s a sort of fusion/classic rock type of approach, and indeed The Eye The Ear and The Arm cite Yes and King Crimson as influences. Some amount of catchiness in the tunes is sacrificed, but one can’t help admire their adventurousness and applaud them for, at the very least, trying something a bit different. These three seem to have a definite vision about the sort of music they would like to make, and it is refreshingly different. One hopes they discover a way to focus this a bit more, as the music (especially the vocals) become a bit meandering at points; but all in all one appreciates the adventurous debut by this Cali trio and look forward to hearing what future paths it follows.
