More often than not when one thinks about music from the 90’s, the first, and probably only, thing that comes to mind is the “grunge” bands that were born and bred in Seattle. What people may not realize is that at the same time that the world was being inundated with grunge noise, there were amazing indie rock bands sprouting as well. These indie bands were breaking new ground and creating the opportunity for talented musicians to step into ring. One such band, No Knife, stayed under the radar but made music that was ahead of its time. They also became the medium for an introduction to Ryan Ferguson. Steadily building a solid, solo career, Ferguson is once again showcasing his impressive range as a songwriter and musician. With his latest release, Only Trying to Help, Ferguson is crafting music that is familiar, but in a comforting and uncontrived fashion. Songs like “Kill My Confidence,” “Must Be Friday Night,” and “Future Reservation” highlight his soothing voice and contemplative lyrics. Ferguson’s decision to venture off on his own was definitely a wise move. Only Trying to Help is a nice twist on the male solo artist trip.
