Since their debut in 2002, Plus Minus have been a band of ingenuity. Regrettably (and most likely unbeknownst to the band) ingenuity does not always transition to entertainment. In the world of prog-rock, odd time signatures and premeditated surprises have been staples, the logical evolution in a world of post-punk’s incongruous chaos. But Plus Minus have adopted a Dismemberment Plan aesthetic with seemingly unabashed power-pop ambitions. The bouncing interplay between vocals and instrumentations have made it feasible to get lost in the irreconcilable chatter. But that was before. Now, in 2006, the band returns with a record one-part pop, two-parts avant-garde titled Let’s Build a Fire. Their third and most impressive LP to date is heaving with witty lyricism and finite precision, bringing Plus Minus’ formerly mangled artistry to fruition. No longer an exercise in noise pollution, Plus Minus is truly a bountiful surprise of freshness and enthusiasm.
