PISSED JEANS

HOPE FOR MEN

SUB POP (06/05/07)

Just as the Seattle band Bloodhag puts ridiculous lyrics about authors atop brutal heavy metal, Piladelphia band Pissed Jeans play some mean, dirty rock music but let their growling front man, Mark Korvette, waste theirs and the listener's time with lyrics about ice cream, scrapbooking, even screeching an ode to his bed. This is not to write off the album as a whole because the world has been lacking in bands taking their aural cues from peers like the Melvins and the Jesus Lizard. This quartet is a vicious one, particularly their maniacal and aggressive drummer Sean McGuinness and the sludgy guitar work of Bradley Fry. When you can't understand a word Korvette is singing, which thankfully is often, it's easy to put those bizarre spoken word rants from "The Jogger" and "Scrapbooking" behind you and concentrate on the band's raucous attack. When he is coming through loud and clear, it is an unfortunate juvenile mess.
