L.A. power-pop with a penchant for the old Paisley Pop underground. “Silly Act” begins the album, sounding like The Three O’clock’s “Jetfighter” amped up and stripped clean of brass accompaniment. Despite these power-pop inflections of Cheap Trick or Big Star, Peachfuzz seem to have their roots more in the jaunty, layered rhythms of the British Invasion. The Kinks, Zombies, Beatles, and Rolling Stones all make their way into the mix. Mellow moments like “Muscat Wine” and the CSN-inspired “LA Is Where I Belong” make for great diversions from the raucous attack of the rest of the album, but Peachfuzz is at their finest when unfettered and energized, especially on the MC5 meets Paisley Pop “Feelin’ Today.” It’s got the power-pop basics, but more importantly, it has so much more.
