“Stop chasing shadows, just enjoy the ride” is the catchy chorus to the lead single from this sixth release by the collective effort known as Morcheeba. If this sounds a bit mantra-ish, well, it is, and the record is filled with them, as they seem to have settled to a peaceful place after some unhappy years. Fortunately (if you are a fan of theirs) that hasn’t changed their fundamental eclectic approach. This record strikes me as particularly cinematic, moody, and evocative, and ranges from trip-hop to folk. “Here in my blue chair, it’s safe and warm,” is one of the many allusions to a womb-like security explored on many of the songs. This feeling is reflected in the almost aquatic quality of the music; perhaps Dive Deep isn’t simply a catchy title, but more indicative of the environment Morcheeba was “channeling.” Whatever the case may be, the effect is very calming, easy to allow to wash over and take in.
