Having previously been part of the Ghostly International roster, Mobius Band is known as much for their reliance on electronics as their catchy, post-punk songwriting. While their label home has changed to Misra, their electro-gazer pop sound strongly remains the band’s focus, as the twitchy bleeps of synthesizers are as prevalent as ever, as are their jangling guitars and ever-so-sweet melodies. On Heaven, the band merges these two elements even further, as leadoff track “Hallie” presents a warm fusion of electronics and strings that creates a gorgeously dense atmosphere that ranks among the band’s most transcendent peaks. “Secret Language” and “A Hint of Blood” are a bit more clear-cut in their delineation of electronics and guitars, but that doesn’t keep them from sounding great. The sure-fire hit is “Friends Like These,” as catchy a song as I’ve heard all year; thoroughly grooving and unapologetic in its’80s-style dance pop approach. If nothing else, this album will get you moving, which can sometimes be the best thing an album can do.
