More danceable than records past, Music For Plants is a step in a fresh and innovative direction for Mixel Pixel. This electronic/indie rock/pop experimental brood born of the mind of multimedia artist Rob Coradetti has become akin to Gorillaz but with an artistic sensibility. Having moved beyond the kids-fooling-around-with-sound vibe of their prior two records, they nonetheless refrain from compromising their integrity as a lo-fi fringe act of unremitting tawdriness. With more awareness and purpose, Music For Plants is adroit and with soul, chunky and to the point. The tools are the same but updated: the dueling boy/girl vocals are tighter, the oversized beats are inventive and louder and their take on pop is utterly original. And, to accompany this hail of sound is their signature live performance: a barrage of stimuli combining Coradetti’s love of music with the visual arts in the form of collages and animations - quite an exhibition indeed. Thus, with clearly no aims to please, Mixel Pixel does anyway, rockin’ an utterly offensive sound in just the right manner to be labeled “effortlessly cool.”
