Since creating Lilys nearly 16 years ago, singer/songwriter Kurt Heasley has issued seven exquisite pop albums. Sonically, Lilys offer a triptych of shoegazer aesthetic, ‘60s psychedelic guitar layers, and indie pop sensibility. A rotating cast of musicians has added to the prismatic lushness that has made Lilys a near underground treasure among various indie rock communities. In 2006, Lilys pick up where 2003’s Precollection left off with the one-man band’s most sincere record to date, Everything Wrong Is Imaginary. Heasley is a single father of three, and such a life does take precedence, even when you’re a musician. Thus, producer Michael Musmanno (Speech, Outkast, The High Dials), who also produced Precollection, abided to Heasley’s homebase, adding polish to Lilys’s simplistic approach for an eclectic, charming set. Album opener “Black Carpet Magic and the sexy, dance-tastic groove of “A Diana’s Diana highlight a glossy, pop sound. Blissed-out psychedelics of “Knocked on the Fortune Teller’s Door and Echo & the Bunnymen-like instrumental title track showcase classic Lilys flair. Everything Wrong Is Imaginary couldn’t be more perfect. Heasley’s and Musmanno’s shared concentration is quite primitive, and such a strong working relationship has allowed Lilys to really find its place.
