Lauded in the UK press the next next big thing, the mighty Klaxons are primed, in their own words, to “invent a genre that was shorter-lived than electroclash
it never even existed.” They may have stumbled onto something here. Atop the frenetic drum beats, fuss bass, blotto guitars and creepy synthesizers are the Klaxons kooky two-part vocal delivery, one voice which is a freaky falsetto and the other a fairly steady baritone. Their biggest hit to date, “Gravity’s Rainbow” which kicks off this sampler for American ears, emerges as a mini-punk-opera with angular melodies, bursts of mayhem, and a hooky chorus that wouldn’t be out of place on a Supergrass best-of. “4 Horsemen of 2012” and “The Bouncer” descend into humorous cacophony. “Gravity’s Van” and “Atlantic Crystal” are fairly generic disco thumpers, but it’s still too early to tell if these pranksters will make merry in the USA.
