Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter JOEMCA releases an estuary of sound on his self-titled debut EP. Crafting a multifarious medium of The Mars Volta meets The Faint, or emo meets industrial noise, he coalesces as an electronic Morrissey, painting vibrant dreamscapes as much with his morbid, synthetical beats as with his poetics. The singer/songwriter sensibilities of the all-too-familiar indie rock scene find themselves in new terrain, spilling across the backdrop of rhythmically captivating beats and a number of erratic yet charming changes. In a sense, like Radiohead’s Kid A, JOEMCA has played with a number of genres in his quest and the results are solid, memorable, and even remarkable. And, with a surprisingly clean and full sound coming from an EP recorded on a small indie label, JOEMCA’s hazy smatterings and pensive melodies can become the soundtrack to your pot-smokin’ dreams. Highlights include leadoff track “Strangers” and the peculiarly erotic “King Rhetoric.”
