GIVING MACHINES

DARLA (10/09/07)

One of the most distinct and loveable characteristics of ambient, instrumental music is its ability to elicit real, raw emotion from its listeners. Though the challenge with this medium is maintaining a sound that is interesting, different, and passionate throughout an album, there are some bands that seem to master those techniques with remarkable dexterity and ease. Japancakes is an instrumental ensemble of talented and innovative musicians that have managed to take indie music to exciting new heights. Their recent release Giving Machines is a delightful escape from the everyday with its quiet and calming melodies. Songs like “Double Jointed” and “The Enabler” have an unusual kick of country twang with the aid of the pedal steel. Each note transforms their harmonies into colorful and vivid imagery. Their cover of the Cocteau Twins’ “Heaven or Las Vegas” really captures the essence of the song without frills and without sounding like elevator music. Giving Machines is quite simply a soothing serenade of instrumental bliss.
