Someone once said that the opposite of love isn’t hate; it’s indifference. There’s no hate here for In Flight Radio, but indifference surely lurks in the background. A talented group for sure, at times creating powerful Britpop-inspired instrumentals and vocal melodies delivered by silken-voiced frontwoman Peira; that the band was able to self-release such a well-produced album is, in itself, an accomplishment. But somewhere, the music leaves a void. Angst-ridden lyrics are tedious and hardly profound: “I just don’t get it / Why do you love me so much / Don’t you see / I’m all messed up is not the only example. The songs tend to stagnate melodically; each catchy track sounds more or less like the one that came before it. And at some point, the Britpop inspiration becomes Britpop imitation. In Flight Radio plays it safe, not playing to its full potential, yet is too talented to be another Coldplay knock-off. Hopefully they’ll adjust their flight plan.
