HUMMINGBIRD

HUMMINGBIRD

CARDBOARD SANGRIA

When requesting this album, I thought it would be by the UK female vocal trio Hummingbird. It certainly isn’t that, but it’s quite a discovery nonetheless. This is a lot of fun; an intriguing mélange of sixties psychedelia, grunge guitars and pedal steel. Whimsical vocals à la Floyd / Nick Drake dominate, but they can toughen up as well (“Speak Softly”). Songs like “Nuclear Winter” and “Lilting” hold out hope that Hummingbird could one day aspire to replacing the much-lamented Grandaddy in the firmament of pastoral, melodic rock. A very pleasant surprise indeed.
