Back in 1991, the Knack did an album called Serious Fun, a title which was intended as a manifesto to simultaneously describe the band’s approach and the results. New York’s HeadQuarters seem to have taken a page from the Knack in creating their debut 5-track EP, Get Your Head On. Combining crunchy riffage, burbling synthetics, head shaking harmonies and manic pop melodicism, HeadQuarters jam power pop into new wave and run it through their neo-psychedelic carburetor until it sounds like the Raspberries as influenced by the Who (“Good Thing (Gone Wrong)), Velvet Crush with a pants pole for the Paisley Underground (“Tunnel Vision), and the Kinks as the Poptopia poster band (“Crosswords). Calling Robert Pollard: your new favorite band is here.
