BRITISH SEA POWER

DO YOU LIKE ROCK MUSIC?

ROUGH TRADE (02/12/08)

There are few questions in life that carry the kind of cultural and spiritual significance that the title of British Sea Power’s new album does. Do You Like Rock Music?, though cheeky in its inquisition, invites the listener to really contemplate rock music and where it fits into one’s everyday life. Do You Like Rock Music? was recorded in three very unusual locations, including Fort Tregantle - a 19th century fortification in Cornwall, England. These unconventional locations speak to BSP’s steadfast commitment to their musical vision and this time around that vision creates one heck of an album. Songs like “All In It” and “Waving Flags” garner their beauty from macabre, but provocative lyrics that rest prominently inside bursts of instrumental ferociousness. There is a consistent crescendo of brazen din resonating throughout every song. Each tune carries with it overwhelming volume that meanders with self-contained purpose. There is structure and clarity in BSP’s new noise and if you didn’t like rock music before, you would be a fool refusing to start now.
