In an era in which we have drowned ourselves in ridiculously over-produced computer music in which the noise is more important than the band, it is refreshing to see a band like Backyard Tire Fire emerge on the scene. With chorus-loving songs that bounce over bluesy folk rock, Back Yard Tire Fire makes music that is truly
fun. Although front man Ed Anderson’s jaunty sing/talk can get tedious at times, overall it works well. The opener and title track “The Places We Lived” is an upbeat, nostalgic look back on youth. It’s a sincerely honest take on growing up that uni quely removes any self loathing and negativity and instead focuses on having a good time. The compulsively sing-able “Shoulda Shut It” is sure to make frequent appearances at drunken karaoke nights soon. The album hits a few bumps on the way, mainly with “How the Hell Did You Get Back Here?” which is a little grating and lyrically over the top. These infrequent rough edges make the rest of the album stand out that much more. The Places We Lived is an exciting album that shows Backyard Tire Fire is a band that knows exactly what it takes to have a good time.
