AMANDINE

SOLACE IN SORE HANDS

FAT CAT (06/05/07)

This young band from Sweden started out playing under the name the Wichita Linemen, which should give you some indication that their minds aren’t on the cold climes of their home country. Rather, the warm guitar tones and aching vocals of Olaf Gidlöf echo the American heartland; and in quite a beautiful fashion. Most of the 11 tracks on this, the band’s second album, almost never get further than a slow, waltzing pace, which helps to amplify the lyrical tones of grief, loneliness, and heartbreak. The emotion of these songs is deepened when Gidlöf’s reaches for a register that he can barely reach without his voice breaking a little bit. It is that kind of endearing sweetness that will no doubt permeate even the hardest of hearts.
