Moorer has been making great records for a decade now. A statuesque beauty with smoky pipes, considered a natural for Nashville star grooming, she right away scoffed at such a narrow-minded career path, hanging out with fellow square pegs Lonesome Bob, Los Straitjackets and Kid Rock instead, pushing electric guitars further up front in her mixes. With her sixth album, Moorer has made the transition to ballsy rocker complete. Produced by newlywed husband and fellow leftie, Steve Earle, Getting Somewhere lives up to its title admirably; Moorer writes all but one of the ten tracks by herself, and she's never sounded more free or impassioned. “Work to Do starts everything off with churning electric guitar and drums, Moorer's announcement that she's back, baby, in a big way and you'd better watch out; the title track concludes with sustained, fuzzy amp hum. In between are gorgeous sing-along melodies wedded to spartan arrangements highlighting Moorer's terrific voice. Recorded in a brisk ten days, Getting Somewhere is freewheeling, affirmative, loud and lean.
