MYTH TAKES

WARP (03/06/07)

Meet !!!. The Rapture and TV On the Radio have become alt music press darlings with their post-punk/dance fusions, while !!! have struggled along, hoping that some would at least correctly pronounce their name (Chk Chk Chk). Tribal rhythms run amok with angular, clipped guitar and fast-paced percussion, like Afrika Bambataa producing the Gang of Four with Bow Wow Wow‘s rhythm section. !!! has been flying under the radar lately, eluding any huge critical or commercial success, but Myth Takes brings their years of work to fruition on an adventurous and boisterous album. As varied as it is different, Myth Takes flows with an unmistakable rhythm and propulsion driven by a small troupe of instruments. Like The Rapture’s Pieces of the People I Love, !!! are moving more towards a hip-hop beat driven sound with electronic effects, lots of percussion, and heavy bass. Unlike The Rapture, !!! do it consistently throughout the album. “Must Be the Moon”, “ A New Name”, and “Heart of Hearts” provide the heart of the album as electronica, tribal rhythms, and vocals create three spectacular dance songs. !!! have adhered to their personal ingenuity and flair; sticking to their own sound, slowly and methodically forming and molding their music into an impressive and well-performed third album.
