ROAD BLOG

Monday, June 5th

Drove out to Chicago for our tour with awesome new-found Swedish pals Dungen. A good time was had by all! After the first show, we got an email from famed Metallica producer, Bob Rock. It went like this: You guys have great tunes and a good sound. I have a buddy in LA that runs Sunset Stuidios. He has ProTools and everything. The shit is state-of-the-art. Macy Gray just cut a new track featuring Santana - it's a great tune with a good sound.

We told him we were sick of the Portools, digital, autotuned bullshit and that we were going for that real warm analog vintage sound. We like the warm vintage sound of analog. We want to use vintage equipment and record everything live - Exile meets Stax meets CCR meets the Zep BBC sessions.

He said that was cool and that he loved that vintage sound and had a lot of vintage analog gear. He said his buddy had a house up in Laurel Canyon and had lots of coke and a dulcimer and maybe a lute. We could go for that real vintage analog sound.

Now I know it's tacky for any of us to start complaining on DAY TWO of our tour blog, and I know I'll regret this (this post is staying ANONYMOUS), but I have to vent. A certain UNNAMED member of Nethers is really hellbent on getting "comfortably buzzed" for soundcheck, and it's just not cool. Especially on day 2 of tour.

First, he/she complains when our rider isn't delivered at 6 pm when we LOAD IN. He/she doesn't want to "have to chug 6 beers after our set and get all bloated." Evidently it'd be better if he/she could "get a little buzzed for soundcheck and space it out all night."

And when the rider isn't there at 6 pm, he/she complains. It's all very passive-aggressive rock star stuff and it's just not cool. Then again, dealing with him/her drunk during soundcheck is better than dealing with him/her sober.

Please everyone...NEVER underestimate the compassion of the Canadian Immigration Officer. But also, don't underestimate their respect for the law. But when you combine a minorly less-than-legitimate visa-exemption letter with over an hour of puppy-dog eyes their big, used-to-the-tundra hearts will melt and let you move along with the sun settling on the horizon. I love it here! Toronto, despite its recent run-in with our all-too-familiar "agents of terror," is still a sparkly monument to diversity and community building...the two best things I love about the PLEZ...holla!

Wow are we tuckered out! The men of Dungen are wonderful conversationalists (in both swedish and english) and we've been tending to stay up too late at night. Lately we've been following them to their hotel rooms and camping out on the floor or in the hotel parking lot. I think the nicest hotel (parking lot) i've stayed in has to be the Holiday Inn Express outside of Columbus!! Right now we're about to get some energy up watching dvds at my boston pal Kyle's house. We'll be playing with J Mascis' new band Witch for the next few nights. He hits the drums pretty hard and we're all pretty excited to hang out! Okay doke see you tomorrow.

Sunday, June 11th

Just rolling up to sunny New Haven, CT after a mellow afternoon at some state beach. The water was really cold, and two members of Nethers slowly waded into it. Then some 9 year old kid was like, "Why don't you just dive in? You're a chicken." So they dove in. Later on, a guitarist from Nethers was out, a bit deeper in the ocean. The same kid rolled up, and said, "I remember you. You were afraid to go in the water. You were chicken." This guitarist however, did not dive in. Then they took a shower at the park and it was freezing. The moral of this story is, no matter how cold the water is, the ocean rules and you should just dive in. And on that note, go ahead and take this story as an allegory for life. Oh yeah, NYC was last night and it ruled.

Wednesday, June 14th

Yesterday was our first day off in quite a bit. So after a hectic morning in Philly, some of us picked up two Swedish bros and headed to the beach. After getting lost in northern Delaware, we rolled up to Assateague National Park at "prime time" -- "prime-time" being the post-4 pm beach time where things are mellow and awesome. We also saw wild ponies almost immediately, which was cool, cuz we promised our Nordic friends wild ponies.

It was then that Pony Touchers was born. Pony Touchers is a collaboration between members of Dungen and Nethers. The members include Stoney Pony, Bologna Pony, Lonely Pony, Grand Master Pony and The Mane Event. We recorded our first EP, Touching Ponies, last night, on the beach, around a bonfire, into a portable tape recorder. What's the Pony Touchers sound, you ask? Great question. I'll leave that to the self-styled critics, as it were, but I'll say this - we're angling for a colored 10'' vinyl release in the fall.

Thursday, June 15th

Currently hanging out in the warm, loving arms of Charlottesville, VA -- or, according to Nikki, the region that "smelt us." Last night's quasi-homecoming in DC was a blast. By the end of our set, we had 5+ Dungen bros on stage jamming away for our last 2 tunes. The shambling cacophony consisted of drums, 2 guitars, bass, vocals, organ, tambourine, shakers, cowbell, and a separate tom-player. Then Gustav wowed our friend Sara by playing obscure Pentangle songs on viola.
