Iron & Wine - “Woman King”
This guy knows how to set a mood, and milk it for all its beauty. Great room sounds and, of course, glorious harmonies.
Elvis Costello - “Tart”
Such an amazing songwriter and singer. The album When I Was Cruel is an absolute beast.
Dappled Cities - “Holy Chord”
This band is like a ball of fire. Fearless. Broadway singing meets Australian indie pop rock with a dash of LSD. And that’s just the half of it.
Gillian Welch - “Elvis Presley Blues”
Gillian and David Rawlings go straight for the soul. They’re so inspiring for that, and I think this tune is one of their best.
Elvis Presley - “Blue Moon”
Sun Studios, heavy vocal slap, enough said.
The Shins - “Gone for Good”
I’m kind of a sucker for pedal steel, and what a great vocal. The recording is so sweet, listening to it feels like a guilty pleasure.
The Zombies - “Care of Cell 44”
Not sure who influenced who here, but this track is undeniable
kind of like the Beach Boys with an added appeal of looseness and non-restriction.
The Libertines - “Can’t Stand Me Now”
These records are addictive, it feels like you’re in the room with them and you might get spat on or something.
D’angelo - “Devil’s Pie”
I love this album - it was recommended by a friend solely from the viewpoint of the well constructed low-end.
Sonic Youth - “Incinerate”
Rather Ripped is a magnificent album. Immediately classic and enjoyable. Makes me want to pick up an instrument.
Sun Kil Moon - “Salvador Sanchez”
This guitar sound is face-melting. It’s actually become a verb in our vocabulary: “skm guitar.”
Neil Young “Will to Love”
Neil is untouchable in my book. He is so unconscious with his art. I love the crackling fireplace in this recording, you can almost curl up in front of it.
The One AM Radio - “Lest I Forget”
This dude is a good friend and his dark melodic songs captivate.
