MIHO HATORI

What is your first musical memory?
Singing in front of my parents and their friends. It seems I did it often.

What was the first album you owned?
The analog record I bought the first time was MC5, Kick Out The Jams.

Were you not a musician, what would your profession be?
No idea....lepidopterist?

What song do you wish you had written?“Nutcracker

What was the first concert you attended?
I guess that was 3 senores from the Andes visiting Japan and touring in Japanese elementary schools with poncho, flute and guitars. Of course, the highlight was “El Condor Pasa. And yes, we all sang the lyrics together in Japanese. It was like singing “Freebird at a Lynyrd Skynyrd arena concert for elementary school kids. We couldn’t hold up lighters, but it was Japan so we all had lights on our mechanical pencils.

Who would be in your ultimate three-band, live performance lineup, dead or alive?
Miles Davis
Bob Marley
Shizuko Kasagi (Japanese queen of Boogie Woogie right after WWII)

I will have bleeding nose for sure …

What instrument would you like to play, that you currently cannot?
Pandeiro

With whom would you like to collaborate?
So many people, so many… Brian Eno, Dr. Dre, Amon Tobin … I can’t write every name here. Basically, unique sound makers.

Also, I really want to work with puppet artist Julie Taymor. She is the bomb.

Which one of your songs would you put in a time capsule?
“The Spirit of Juliet

The song is about a futuristic cyborg who starts to have emotions and tastes the bitterness and sweetness of love. I don’t know if that kind of thing will happen in the future but it would be so fun to discover that somebody was singing a daydream of future human technology. I wonder if human beings in the future will have the ability to feel the bitterness and sweetness of love and life. I feel sometimes people start to forget and then they want to die.

What album can you not live without?

Who was your first pop star romantic crush/fantasy?
Umm... I don't remember well.... What I remember is that I crushed on Harrison Ford as Han Solo (Star Wars ).
